Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel produced by fermenting and distilling crops that have been converted into simple sugars. Ethanol is made from sugar crops or from agricultural waste and "cellulosic biomass" such as trees and grasses.

In the United States, Ethanol is typically made from starch crops, primarily corn. When 85% alcohol fuel is mixed into gasoline, the result is known as E85, a cleaner burning fuel because of its high oxygen content. Above all, Ethanol fuel degrades quickly in water and poses much less risk to the environment than oil and gasoline. E85 is completely renewable, domestically produced, and is an environmentally friendly fuel. However, NOT ALL ENGINES CAN RUN ON E85 ETHANOL FUEL and damage occurs to non-E85 compatible vehicles. To determine if your vehicle can run on E85 fuel, check your vehicle manual or the inside of your vehicle "fuel door" for E85 fuel compatibility (or if it can be fueled with a level of 85% Ethanol).
